Stones & Skills Guide: Power Stones, Oni Stones, Red Souls & Charms
How the Onimusha: Way of the Sword upgrade system works: 55 Power Stones and Oni Stones unlock skills, Red Souls enhance them, 15 Charms add passives — plus what to unlock first.
Looking for “runes”? Start here
There is no system called runes in Onimusha: Way of the Sword — the upgrade system players are describing when they search that word runs on stones and souls:
Power Stones → unlock regular skills
Oni Stones → unlock Oni skills on the skill tree
Red Souls → enhance the skills you have unlocked
Charms → passive bonuses, upgraded at Emma's Hall
(Rune-shaped puzzles do exist — the water basin rune alignment is one — but those are environment puzzles, not progression. [MULTI-PLAYER])
The two-currency split, in practice
Skills live on a tree with two doors. Power Stones open the regular skills; Oni Stones open the Oni skills — the ones tied to your Oni equipment and supernatural tools. Once a skill is unlocked, Red Souls — the same souls you absorb from defeated enemies — enhance it further.
That makes every fight double as income: the souls you absorb are not just health and resource recovery, they are the enhancement budget for the tree. If you have been absorbing nothing, you have also been upgrading nothing.
The numbers that matter
55 Power Stones in a playthrough [MULTI-PLAYER]
Oni Stones: not enough in one run
to max the Oni tree [MULTI-PLAYER]
15 Charms total [MULTI-PLAYER]
The scarcity is the design. Power Stone supply roughly covers a solid regular build; Oni Stone supply does not cover the full Oni tree — you are forced to choose. Oni Portals (side missions into the Oni realm) are how you chase the rest of the tree, so if a specific Oni skill is your goal, the route runs through those portals rather than the main missions.
What to unlock first
Community consensus on early picks is still forming, but one recommendation repeats across guides:
- Oni Vision: Treasures — reveals hidden chests. It pays for itself for the rest of the game, and chest loot feeds both currencies. [MULTI-PLAYER]
Beyond that, two principles hold regardless of build:
- Unlock before you enhance. A new skill usually changes what you can do; an enhancement usually makes an existing answer slightly better. Early on, breadth beats depth.
- Fix your failure mode. Dying to boss strings? Unlock the defensive line. Missing Issen windows? The offensive timing skills help less than parry discipline does — see the combat guide.
Exact skill names, stone costs per node, and the full tree layout are being documented fight by fight and will land on this page as they can be cited — we will not list costs we have not verified.
Charms, briefly
Fifteen charms exist, found through exploration and rewarded content. They provide passive bonuses and are upgraded at Emma’s Hall. A community tier list is already forming around them, but the honest early-game advice is simpler: equip whatever covers your current weakness — survival charm for boss fights, utility charm for Kyoto exploration — and swap freely. Charm locations are being catalogued; a full 15/15 locations page goes up once every slot can be placed on the map.
Common mistakes
- Hoarding Red Souls. They are enhancement fuel, not a score. Unspent souls are unupgraded skills.
- Spreading Power Stones across everything. You have roughly enough for one coherent regular build — pick a shape and finish it.
- Ignoring Oni Portals. If the Oni tree matters to your build, the portals are not optional side content; they are the supply line.
- Treating Charms as set-and-forget. Swapping a charm before a known fight is free power.
FAQ
Are Power Stones missable? Specific per-stone placement is still being verified. What is confirmed: the total (55) assumes thorough exploration, so chests you skip are stones you do not have — another reason Oni Vision: Treasures is the safe early unlock.
Can I respec? Not confirmed yet. Until it is, spend like you cannot undo it.
What is the fastest Red Soul income? Absorb consistently in regular fights — see the souls guide — and note that bosses like Daidara can steal the same drops, so field discipline matters even in boss fights.
