Sasaki Ganryu Boss Guide: Kiyomizu-dera Duel
How to approach the Sasaki Ganryu duel at Kiyomizu-dera in the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo: parry, deflect, and when Issen is actually worth it.
Where the fight happens
Sasaki Ganryu waits at the end of the Kiyomizu-dera demo route, on the wooden temple stage. Regular enemies before this can feel manageable; the duel is the first hard timing check.
What it tests
- committed, readable swings
- not extending after a short punish
- parry for immediate openings
- deflect when pressure makes parry greedy
- holding Issen until you know the rhythm
Recommended approach
First attempts: scout. Guard is fine if it buys information.
Parry the swings with a clear wind-up. Do not try to parry every twitch.
Deflect when his pressure makes your parry timing fall apart. It is the better learning tool until the duel is familiar.
Issen only on a pattern you can already read. It is a poor default for a first clear.
Common mistakes
- attacking after the punish window is already gone
- panicking after one hit
- treating every clash as a cue to keep swinging
- trying to win on Issen attempts instead of learning the strings
Fast checklist
- Keep the camera centered
- Learn one reliable parryable swing
- Deflect strings you do not trust yet
- Punish briefly, then reset
- Issen only on a known pattern
